The pieces appear to be in place, now if the Aberdeen Roncalli girls' golf team members could just get out on the course.
The Cavaliers are excited about the prospects of their upcoming season, but this spring's weather has prevented them from getting outside.
"We have been practicing in the gym for about three weeks," said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger. "We do have the putting surfaces. We have the chipping nets."
What they haven't had is chance to hit the fairways.
"It's hard," Brandenburger said of being stuck indoors. "I try to make it fun. We try to do some different things."
Roncalli will be led by junior Samantha Bot, who finished 34th at the state tourney a year ago.
"Sam is a great golfer," Brandenburger said. "She has a beautiful form. She let's the club do the work for her."
Brianna Weber, also a junior, was 91st at the state tournament last spring and is also looking sharp this spring.
"She's definitely taking the time to work on her swing," Brandenburger said. "Brianna is a very calm golfer. She keeps her head. She is very cool."
Roncalli's other returning state qualifier is the coach's daughter, sophomore Madison Brandenburger, who literally grew up on a golf course.
"Maddie's been playing since she was 4-years-old," said her mother. "She was a very fast golfer and she has learned to take the time now with that swing."
Additional support is expected to come from freshman Hailey Thares, and eighth-graders Brooke Olson and Christian Berbos.
Faith Heller, who finished 56th at the state tournament, decided not to go out for golf this spring.
Brandenburger, who is in her first year as the head coach after being an assistant for two years, said the golfers are looking forward to the upcoming season.
"Our goal would be to make it to state as a team," Brandenburger said. "We are working with our younger girls to get them prepared and ready."
Roncalli finished 11th in the team standings at state last year.
The Cavaliers were scheduled to open their season this week, but the weather took care of that as well. Now, Roncalli will set its sights on April 16 for a meet in Dell Rapids.
Brandenburger knows her team has plenty of work to do, but is confident that they can get the job done.
"It's going to be a really good challenge," Brandenburger said. "We need some of those younger gals to definitely step up to the plate, there's no doubt about it, and they can do it."
